The skies of Europe. Culture, creativity and equality
Free eventThe intentional destruction of works of art, the neglect of monuments and landscapes, declining historic cities and the spread of urban ghettos are all different yet converging signs of not only an economic and political crisis, but a cultural one too. We are forgetting how to live with our past, unable to view it with anything other than nostalgia or disquiet. There is no better observatory of this phenomenon than Europe, now riddled with the disintegration generated by an economic-cum-political project in which culture has only been given a secondary role until now. But apart from the creative use of critical thought, is there anything that can help us understand the processes now in motion? A “plural” cultural memory observed “from a distance” is the breeding ground for a kind of creativity pursued not for the fleeting thrill of success, but rather for the fulfilment of one’s potential. This feeling can make people feel rooted in the community to which they belong.

Salvatore Settis has served as the Director of the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles and the Scuola Normale Superiore in Pisa as well as the President of the Cultural Heritage Board. He was a Warburg Professor at Hamburg University, gave the Isaiah Berlin Lectures in Oxford and the Mellon Lectures at the National Gallery in Washington, as well as holding the Chair of the Prado Museum in Madrid and the Borromini Chair at the Università della Svizzera Italiana. Since 2010, he has been Chairman of the Louvre Museum’s Scientific Advisory Council. His studies cover topics relating to ancient and post-ancient art history, as well cultural policies and trends. His most recent books include: Paesaggio Costituzione cemento (2010); Azione popolare. Cittadini per il bene comune (2012), If Venice Dies (2014), Costituzione!
