The opening sentence of Tristes Tropiques by C. Lévi-Strauss: ‘I hate traveling and travelers,’ sounds all the more paradoxical if one considers that what follows is one of the most fascinating travel books ever written. But Tristes Tropiques, as Toni Servillo’s reading will show, is much more than that. It is indeed a journey inside man, his narratives, his cultures; a journey into the history of the world and of relationships between colonizing and colonized nations; a journey into the perspective of every society that looks to other societies, presuming to be better than those. It is also the journey that the great French ethnologist, who died in 2009 aged 100 years, took inside himself. In that work, Lévi-Strauss relinquished the academic’s style and succeeded in creating a strikingly poetic language. Listening to the words he wrote in 1955 will help us understand his greatness and appreciate even his bitter forecasts, which have often come true.
