The Canto of Ulysses

teatro Manzoni 3

Today, Primo Levi is considered a classic contemporary author, the eyewitness of Auschwitz par excellence, but also a storyteller, a man of science and a thinker of international standing. This opportunity to listen to him again today, thirty years after his death, in Toni Servillo’s extraordinary interpretation, is a tribute to a unique writer, read and loved worldwide. The readings, drawn from If This is a Man and The Periodic Table, highlight the crucial role and meaning culture played in one man’s life, portrayed in a natural and straightforward way. Indeed, it is in the most appalling and extreme situations that humanity comes together and human beings discover their humanity, thanks to their culture too. Only a great writer can describe – as Primo Levi does in The Canto of Ulysses – the redemptive experience of two young prisoners who struggle to survive in the hell of a concentration camp also with the help of Dante’s verses. Because culture makes us human.
