If culture makes us human, who transmits this knowledge? Who can teach?

From time immemorial, scholars have studied the question of the delicate, inescapable teacher-pupil relationship, work continued by Claudio Magris, one of the leading intellectuals of our times.

He starts from his own experience with one of his teachers – the poet Biagio Marin – with whom he went on to develop a close intellectual relationship spanning almost 30 years. Magris will then consider his intense and fruitful teaching activities, before moving on to examine notable examples from the history of literature. He will talk about the very special relationship that has enabled the transfer of knowledge for millennia and the acknowledgement between teacher and pupil: “To have a true teacher is a great fortune, but also a merit, because it presupposes the ability to recognise them and accept their help”.
