The Pistoia Symphonic Season is paying homage to the Dialogues on Man festival with a presentation of the ninth Symphony. One of the greatest musical accomplishments of the past centuries and a cornerstone for future art and cultures, the “Choral” Symphony represents the most effective message of joy and universal brotherhood Western civilisation has ever produced. Beethoven’s ninth Symphony premiered in Vienna in 1824 and has since become one of the most widely performed works in the entire classical repertoire. In 2001, its score and words were included in UNESCO’s ‘Memory of the World’ register. The culminating theme of the fourth movement, readapted by Herbert von Karajan, was adopted as the European Union’s anthem in 1972.
